The Architecture of Objects: Cooking With Ponti
The studio used the design and fabrication of furniture objects as fertile territory to explore and clarify design ideas pursuant to larger architectures. The studio work provided the collective setting for a student hosted lunch, a Mid Winter’s Convivium for host of invited guests at semester’s end. The studio selected for study, as a virtual mentor, the design and fabrication processes of the Milanese architect and designer, Gio Ponti.
The design of each object engaged a different set of material and fabrication processes and levels of craft. Each student designed and fabricated:
A Serving Tray: Using a combination of three materials and three fabrication processes. To serve a dozen studio made chocolate baci.
I Piatti dei Buoni Ricordi: Ceramic plates of good memories.
A Pair of Chairs: What is it like to make two of something?
A Table: Steel, concrete and stone. Welding and Brazing.
In lieu of a formal review, the students hosted a lucnh for one-on-one conversations at their tables serving dishes they prepared from their own family and regional cuisine.
